Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
