Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
