A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January surged in the hours before President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.
A single trader, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Market statistics shows that traders put the odds of the president's removal at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet the odds had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.
A small number of other individuals also made large payouts from predicting the capture.
Some lawmakers are growing concerned.
A bill put forward on recently would prevent government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.
Prediction markets were examined under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
